NEXT STEPS: WHAT IF YOUR MEDICAL BILLS GET CAUGHT BETWEEN TWO INSURANCE COMPANIES?
A Denial From One Insurance Company Doesn’t Always Mean the Problem Is Resolved
Insurance paperwork can be confusing enough when you’re dealing with one company. It can become even more frustrating when two different insurance carriers may be involved.
That’s the situation the wife in this month’s case found herself facing after her husband’s accident resulted in extensive hospital care. While a workers compensation claim was being disputed, approximately $250,000 in medical expenses also needed to be addressed through auto insurance. But there was a problem.
The original workers compensation denial included language stating that medical authorization paperwork had not been signed. According to those involved with the case, that wording became an obstacle to getting the medical expenses addressed through the auto insurance carrier. Suddenly, his wife wasn’t dealing with just one insurance issue—she was caught between the two.
The workers compensation denial eventually had to be corrected so that it accurately reflected the situation without the disputed authorization language. That seemingly small change helped remove an obstacle preventing the other insurance claim from moving forward. Cases like this are a good reminder that the wording on an insurance document can matter.
If you find yourself caught between insurance companies:
- Keep every denial letter and insurance document you receive.
- Ask why a claim was denied and what specific documentation is still needed.
- Don’t assume another insurance company will automatically take over just because one carrier denied coverage.
- Pay attention to whether the reason listed on a denial accurately reflects what happened.
- Ask questions before signing medical authorizations or other documents you don’t understand.
- Consider getting help if medical bills are piling up while insurance companies determine who is responsible.
When you’re already dealing with an injury or the loss of someone you love, insurance paperwork may feel like the last thing you should have to worry about. But understanding what each carrier is saying—and making sure the paperwork accurately reflects your situation—can help prevent one insurance problem from creating another.
